Sentence Structure Mastery

Understanding sentence structure is key to forming correct English sentences. Most English sentences follow the Subject + Verb + Object pattern.

The Basic Sentence Structure
Subject Verb Object

The person/thing doing the action + The action itself + The person/thing receiving the action

Element Function Examples
Subject Who or what performs the action I, You, He, She, It, We, They 🔊
Verb The action or state of being eat, drink, read, write, go, come 🔊
Object Who or what receives the action book, water, food, pen, house 🔊
Sentence Building Practice

Let's build sentences together. Identify the Subject, Verb, and Object in these examples:

"I read a book." 🔊

  • Subject: I
  • Verb: read
  • Object: a book

"She drinks water." 🔊

  • Subject: She
  • Verb: drinks
  • Object: water

"They play football." 🔊

  • Subject: They
  • Verb: play
  • Object: football

Present Simple Tense

The Present Simple tense is used for habits, routines, general truths, and fixed arrangements. It's one of the most commonly used tenses in English.

When to Use Present Simple
  • Habits and routines (I drink tea every morning)
  • General truths (The sun rises in the east)
  • Fixed arrangements (The train leaves at 5 PM)
  • Permanent situations (I live in Karachi)
Present Simple Structure
Type Structure Example Urdu Translation
Affirmative Subject + Verb (add -s/-es for he/she/it) I eat rice. She eats rice. 🔊 میں چاول کھاتا ہوں۔ وہ چاول کھاتی ہے۔
Negative Subject + do/does + not + Verb I do not like tea. He does not play football. 🔊 مجھے چائے پسند نہیں ہے۔ وہ فٹ بال نہیں کھیلتا۔
Question Do/Does + Subject + Verb Do you speak English? Does she work here? 🔊 کیا آپ انگریزی بولتے ہیں؟ کیا وہ یہاں کام کرتی ہے؟
Third Person Singular Rule

For he, she, and it, add -s to the verb: I work → He works, I eat → She eats. For verbs ending in -ch, -sh, -ss, -x, or -o, add -es: I watch → He watches, I go → She goes.
